Ecological Management Guideline for Silverstream Falls
Ecological Management Guideline - The Concept behind Silverstream Falls
Prepared by: Kessels & Associates Ltd and Lawrence Cross Chapman & Co. Ltd
Aims for Silverstream Falls to achieve:
- Preserve and restore reservoirs of indigenous semi-coastal forest species and link them to create a pathway for the (re-)colonisation of these plants from the mountains to the sea
- Improve biodiversity and quality of previously cleared areas
- Create corridors of indigenous vegetation between house sites and existing old growth and regenerating bush areas
- Assist the survival of species such as kiwi which before had little ability to cross inhospitable ground
- Create and improve refuges by providing buffer areas and maximising habitat sizes
- Reduce adverse effects of weed infestation
What to do:
- Maintain and enhance areas of indigenous vegetation
- Avoid or limit the use of exotic plant species to those which are unlikely to become weeds
- Exclude domestic stock from the covenant areas by appropriate fencing
- Implement a weed and animal pest control programme
